Waipara Vineyards and Wineries (south of Kaikoura)

The vineyards of the Waipara Valley, about 130km south of Kaikoura along the coast, are a premier wine destination in NZ.

Each year, the combined Waipara wineries are known to produce more than 100,000 cases of wine for export and local consumption.

The warm summer weather and relatively low rainfall compared to much of NZ is what makes Waipara such a fantastic region for wine growing.

There are now around 80 vineyards scattered throughout the Waipara region.

Some of the Waipara are famed for winning prestige awards and produce all the very best types of wines:

  • Pinot Noir
  • Riesling
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Chardonnay

There are a good number of winery properties here that allow visitors. You can experience wine tasting, and tours of the vineyards.

A growing number of Waipara winers now also have restaurants serving up local produce and gourmet meals, to go along with your wine.

One of the most well known Waipara wineries is Pegasus Bay.

Pegasus Bay has an on-site restaurant, complete with a stunning view.

Black Estate is a top winery in Waipara, consisting of three vineyards, and here you can find some unique organic wines as well as food on site.

At Waipara Springs you can pick up some locally produced food at the cafe.
