Ōhau Snow Fields – South Island New Zealand

Along State Highway 8 is the small town of Twizel. Staying here allows you to avoid the hustle and bustle of the busier surrounding areas. Or just pass through and stop for a snack at one of the few eateries here.

If you’re here in winter, the Ōhau Snow Fields are a must-visit for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

Here’s the basic stats:

Highest Lift: 1825m

Lift Base: 1425m

Vertical drop: 400m

Base facilities: 1500m

One of the best things about this smaller, lesser known hidden gem of a ski field is of course: less crowds!

Even during peak season, Ōhau’s more out of the way location and smaller size results in it rarely being crowded. It can feel very remote and quiet, compared to the bigger ski areas.

There are only 3 ski lifts (1 chairlift, 1 snow mat, 1 platter) and a ski area of about 125 hectares.

Lake Ōhau Lodge is the closest accommodation to these ski fields.

You get access to a ski field ticket discount when staying at the lodge.

Ōhau is still worth visiting in summer! Take in the mountain scenery by vehicle or on foot.

You can also choose to hike to the top of Mount Sutton.
